Martin Fowler’s death has impacted a nation – and continues to do so, ahead of his funeral in EastEnders next week.
Following his devastating on-screen demise, actor James Bye has revealed to fans why he has left EastEnders and why Martin had to die as he confirms he quit the show as it ‘felt right’.
He said: ‘Saying goodbye is not easy, but after 10 years at EastEnders and on the night of the shows epic 40th anniversary – the time felt right.
‘It’s an honour to leave on a story of this magnitude. A huge thank you to all the fans of the show – EastEnders wouldn’t be what it is without you – and to the BBC and EastEnders team for trusting me with this role for so many years.
‘This fruit and veg man will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s time to look forward, and I’m incredibly excited for what the future holds. RIP Martin Fowler.’
Show boss Chris Clenshaw added: ‘It’s incredibly sad to say goodbye to James, who has been a much loved loyal company member for 10 years.
‘James’ performance in tonight’s live episode was nothing short of outstanding and one that I know will touch so many of you watching at home due to his loveable portrayal of Martin Fowler, which has made him a firm favourite amongst the viewers.
‘When discussing James’ exit, we knew that we needed to give Martin Fowler the big explosive storyline that his character deserved.
‘To leave the show in such an emotional storyline, during a live episode is something incredibly courageous to do as an actor, and one that I’m sure will cement itself in EastEnders’ history.
‘I would like to thank James for everything he’s given to EastEnders, and although we will all miss him here at Elstree, he will always remain a member of the EastEnders family and we wish him the best for the future.’

Martin passed away after declaring his love and making wedding plans with Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner). The couple were clearly soulmates to the end but Martin, trapped under a collapsed metal beam, didn’t make it.
Stacey’s devastated screams rang through the Square as the worst was confirmed.
Nearly two months on from the heartbreaking goodbye, his death continues to have a huge impact on the Walford community.
Stacey has fled to stay with brother Sean, leaving Martin’s other ex-wife Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton) to organise his funeral.

As for first wife Sonia (Natalie Cassidy), she broke down in tears at his coffin side in today’s episode, referring to him as the ‘love of [her] life’.
With daughter Bex (Jasmine Armfield) making a brief stop off to bid farewell, next week’s episodes are bound to be an emotional affair.
Plus, as one door closes, another opens. Martin’s niece Vicki (Alice Haig) has returned after 21 years with a new fella, Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) and his son, Joel (Max Murray) in tow.
In true soap style, they’re riddled with debt… and hiding a few secrets.
Here’s to the next chapter of the Fowler story, we won’t forget ya Martin!
