Eve Unwin’s (Heather Peace) proposal to Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) caused
quite a stir among EastEnders fans – and not just because of how dramatic it was. Eve
got down on one knee in the middle of the Queen Vic to tell girlfriend Suki just how
much she loved her – even going so far as to translate some of her speech into Punjabi – before asking for her hand in marriage. However, it wasn’t just this sweet moment that fans were talking about, as many came to a sudden realisation after spotting Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) in the scene. Viewers may be aware that Stacey and Eve are actually married, having tied the knot off-screen in 2021. Fans were quick to take to X/Twitter to point out their seemingly forgotten marriage, wondering how this will affect Suki and Eve should they get engaged.
While some couldn’t believe Eve would propose while still married to another woman, others asked why they hadn’t yet had their marriage annulled. Stacey and Eve’s marriage was all a set-up in order to get Eve out of prison, as she needed to prove that she had somewhere to live in order to be granted probation.
Though they have no romantic feelings for each other, they are platonic soulmates and have remained the best of friends ever since meeting in prison. Over the years, they have supported each other through some terrifying situations, including one which saw Eve help Stacey cover up Freddie Slater’s (Bobby Brazier) attack on Theo Hawthorne (William Ellis). Stacey has also been there to pick up the pieces when Eve’s love life hasn’t gone to plan, offering her countless shoulders to cry on and standing up to people on Eve’s behalf. With Eve eager to marry Suki, will her marriage to Stacey cause issues, especially considering the conditions of her probation?
