Coronation Street viewers ‘sobbing’ over ‘cruel mistake’

Coronation Street viewers were left heartbroken when Julie Carp died during Monday’s episode of the ITV soap. Emotional scenes saw Julie and Eileen head to the lake for a peaceful afternoon in the sunshine. But things soon took a dark turn when Eileen returned from getting them both a cup of tea to find Julie unconscious.

Later in the episode, George discovered that Julie had left some video messages for Eileen and Todd. After watching Julie’s farewell videos, he began to wonder if Julie had planned her own death. He told his mum: “I think Julie took her own life today.”

Fans were left in tears as Julie said her final farewell to her time on the cobbles. They took to social media following the heartbreaking scenes.

One user wrote: “Sue Cleaver and Katy Cavanagh were brilliant tonight! I’ll miss Eileen and Julie so much.” More added to the conversation: “Such sorrowful scenes, kudos to Sue & Katy for that, because it was heartbreaking” and “Julie Carp is dead, nobody speak to me, that episode was heartbreaking.”

Despite the overwhelmingly positive response to Julie’s death, other fans felt disappointed that Julie was brought back into Weatherfield just to be killed off. One fan said: “Am I annoyed corrie only brought Julie Carp back to die? Yes. Am I sobbing at her death? Also yes xx”

More added to the discussion on X: “Why did they bring Julie back just to kill her off?” and “I’m still mad about them bringing Julie back only to have her die but the opening monologue tonight did make me cry.”

Another social media user wrote: “I’m not sure I’ll ever forgive @itvcorrie for killing Julie off. To bring her back after 10 years just for this short, heart-breaking storyline to aid Eileen’s exit was just unnecessary and cruel. Katy Cavanagh, of course, was excellent, though. She always was.”

Earlier this year, Julie Carp returned to Weatherfield after almost 10 years. Katy Cavanagh reprised her role as part of her sister, Eileen Grimshaw’s (Sue Cleaver) exit storyline. It was confirmed that Sue had decided to bid farewell to the Cobbles after 25 years in the iconic role.

Speaking about her return to the soap, Katy said: “It is exciting to dust off Julie’s quirky wardrobe again and an absolute joy to step back onto the cobbles. Julie is so much fun, I’ve missed her.”

The character first joined Coronation Street in 2008 after a holiday romance with Kirk Sutherland, which kickstarted her turbulent time on the ITV soap. She endured a rollercoaster love life before she finally exited Weatherfield with Brian Packham in 2015. Brian, who is played by Peter Gunn, soon returned to the Cobbles after they split.

Show bosses heaped praise on Julie after her return as producer Kate Brooks said: “We’re delighted to have the inimitable Julie Carp back on the cobbles.

“As the ever lovable Julie breezes back into the lives of the Grimshaw’s, not everything is quite as it seems, and Julie’s secret sets off a chain of events that has huge ramifications for Eileen.

“Katy has slipped back into Julie’s shoes with such ease that it’s like she’s never been away, and we can’t wait for the audience to watch Julie’s story unfold; a story full of love, laughter and tears.”
