Coronation Street‘s James Bailey is rocked by a shocking text message in Wednesday’s episode.
The Bailey family’s ongoing baby storyline takes an unexpected turn when James receives alarming news about his partner Danny Tomlinson.
James recently returned to Weatherfield from the US, where he’s been living with Danny.
Since coming back to town, he’s had initial conversations with his sister Dee-Dee about adopting her newborn baby daughter so that he and Danny can finally achieve their dreams of becoming parents.
In Wednesday’s episode, Dee-Dee reveals that she has undergone an emergency hysterectomy following her traumatic labour experience.
Dee-Dee’s father Ed encourages her to think very carefully about whether she still wants to give away her baby daughter, as she won’t be able to carry any more children.
James also fears that this could change everything, but Dee-Dee is adamant that she’s sticking to her original plan and handing the child over to him.
In the closing moments of the episode, an excited James arrives back on the cobbles with baby Laila.
Suddenly, there’s another shocking development that could derail all of the plans.
After reading a worrying text message, James tells his brother Michael: “It’s Danny’s mate. He’s saying Danny’s been in a car accident. He’s saying it’s serious.”
Channique Sterling-Brown, who plays Dee-Dee, had recently confirmed that her character would unexpectedly be left with the baby due to James having to rush back to America.
Asked how Dee-Dee will cope, Channique told us: “I don’t think she will! It’ll be really interesting. You’re going to see that turmoil for Dee-Dee – she’s torn and completely broken again. We thought it couldn’t get any worse for her, but it does.
“Dee-Dee is running on empty and is then faced with having to look at her own child. She really thought that she’d done the right thing and she wouldn’t be immediately confronted with the baby, but now she is.
“It really is a huge thing for her to wrap her head around. I think she is going to struggle with that.”
