Kelvin Fletcher has revealed that he was once turned down by Coronation Street producers, before landing the role as Andy Sugden in Emmerdale.
The 41-year-old actor joined Emmerdale in 1996 and left after a 20-year stint in 2016 to focus on other projects.
Speaking with Coronation Street’s Channique Sterling-Brown, Kelvin disclosed that he had auditioned for a part on the Cobbles but was rejected in favour of Brassic star Joseph Gilgun.
“I once auditioned for Corrie,” he shared on his and wife Liz Fletcher’s Off Script… Coronation Street and Emmerdale podcast.
“It was actually for a little boy called Jamie who Jack Duckworth took under his wing, and I was down to the last two with Joe Gilgun.
“He obviously got the role, a year later I ended up in Emmerdale and the rest is history.”
Despite being turned down for the part, Kelvin did manage to secure a smaller role during one episode in 1996 before his Emmerdale success.
While many have called for the actor to return to the soap, he seemingly has no plans to make a comeback.
During a previous episode of their podcast, he caught up with Emmerdale star Nicola Wheeler, who plays Nicola King.
After expressing dissatisfaction with his on-screen daughter Sarah Sugden’s (Katie Hill) antics, Nicola playfully offered Kelvin a comeback role.
“I’m offering you a job Kelvin,” she proposed. “I’m in that position now at work, I’ve been there how many years? You can come back, have an affair with Nicola.”
Kelvin chuckled at the idea before quickly changing the subject to delve deeper into the future of Nicola’s character.
Since departing from the show, he has pursued other acting opportunities as well as a career in professional racing driving and farming.
In 2021, he and his wife purchased a 120-acre plot in the village of Wincle, near Macclesfield, Cheshire.
Their farming journey was initially documented in the BBC TV series, Kelvin’s Big Farming Adventure, which premiered in January 2022.
The couple have since taken the lead in ITV’s Fletchers’ Family Farm, along with a special Fletchers’ Family Farm at Christmas.
