EastEnders legend teases unexpected “emotional” scene in Sonia’s final week

EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy has teased one of her “most emotional” final scenes as Sonia Fowler.

The soap legend announced back in January that she will be bowing out as Sonia, who she has played on on-and-off since 1993.

Ahead of her exit next week, Cassidy has revealed that the “most emotional” scene from her final week is “a very short one” between Sonia and Phil Mitchell, played by Steve McFadden.

“I love how they nod to their shared history. Because Sonia was in love with his late godson Jamie, there’s always a link between them,” she told RadioTimes.

“I was in tears when I read the lines. It was such a simple, tiny scene but it meant a lot. I’m glad I got to have that goodbye with Steve.”

Cassidy went on to praise her co-star, saying: “He is incredible. I petitioned on Instagram he should get a BAFTA. Steve is a friend and I’ve learnt a lot from him over the years, his work ethic is unbelievable.”

The soap star also opened up about her experience working with McFadden last year, admitting that she’s actually “frightened of Phil” because McFadden is “so good at what he does”.

“I’m very good friends with Steve, but as soon as I step on set and Phil is there, you can’t help but not be scared of Phil,” she said at the time.

Recalling one of Sonia’s “tear ups” with Phil over two decades ago and how it felt facing off against him, Cassidy said: “I’d helped Lisa get away, run away, and Phil comes to the door and bashes the door down and is like: ‘Where’s my baby?! Where’s Lisa?! Where is she?!’

“And Sonia’s like ‘I don’t know; I don’t know’. We did all this kind of, you know, him pushing me, and it was brilliant.

“Screaming, I was like ‘I have made it now’. Once you’ve done a scene like that with Steve McFadden, you have made it.”
