A recent, informal survey on Reddit has ignited a fiery debate within the passionate Emmerdale fandom. Following the high-profile returns of iconic characters like Joe Tate, Ross Barton, and especially Robert Sugden, many viewers are starting to feel that the village of Emmerdale is becoming simply too crowded. The burning question on everyone’s lips: “Which characters should be axed to make room for fresh storylines?”

And the list, complete with compelling justifications, is now out!

Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh) & Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick): Obsolete After Nate’s Discovery?

Two names that surfaced repeatedly are Tracy Metcalfe and Vanessa Woodfield. While Tracy was recently at the heart of a scandalous affair with Caleb Miligan, fans now believe her storyline has run its course, especially with the tragic discovery of Nate Robinson’s (Oliver Farnworth) body imminent.

One fan’s blunt assessment: “Once Nate’s death spreads, there’ll be no need for Tracy. Vanessa’s unnecessary too.”

Vanessa, despite her recent return to the Dales after maternity leave, has also faced criticism. Many viewers had hoped for a rekindled romance with Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), but a reunion still looks unlikely. “I had heard so many good things about Vanessa and was excited to hear she would come back and then she came back and has been so boring. She and Tracy could both go,” another fan lamented. Some even argue they “need to keep having a purpose” if they aren’t part of the “key families” of Emmerdale.

Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley) & Joe Tate (Ned Porteous): Emmerdale’s Most Disliked Duo?

Dawn Taylor also finds herself squarely in the crosshairs of viewer discontent. Ever since she embarked on her controversial affair with Joe Tate (and notably, almost killed him by pushing him out a window!), she has become increasingly unpopular. Her decision to end her marriage to Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle), tearing their family apart for Joe, has particularly incensed fans.

“Joe and Dawn should deffo pack up specifically Dawn,” one viewer emphatically declared. Another even suggested: “Dawn is busy but now I’m really sold on killing her off and letting Billy be a single dad and maybe getting together with one of our town single moms.”

Charles Anderson (Kevin Mathurin) & Claudette Anderson (Flo Wilson): A Severe Lack of Storylines!

The mother-son duo of Charles Anderson and Claudette Anderson are also drawing frustration from viewers due to a noticeable lack of compelling storylines. “Charles and Claudette have not really done anything since I began watching the show in December 2023. I do like both of these characters and actors, but that’s a long time to watch characters not do anything that another character could have done instead,” one viewer explained. Many believe Charles is a “horrible vicar” and should either find a new career path or be written out of the show entirely.

 Kim Tate (Claire King): Bring Back the “90s Villainess”!

While fans don’t necessarily want Kim Tate (Claire King) to leave the show, they are overwhelmingly dissatisfied with the “new and improved” version of the iconic businesswoman. Once one of the soap’s most formidable villains in the 90s, Kim has been significantly “tamed” since her permanent return in 2018.

“Well, I really don’t like Kim’s new personality. Her character is nothing like she used to be. They need to get rid of this sappy Kim & bring the old Kim Tate back,” one impassioned fan demanded.
