Enemy of the people Joe Tate was pushed out of a window in Emmerdale this week, as the village gathered to celebrate the birthday of Lydia Dingle. Joe’s currently in an induced coma, suffering a brain bleed at the moment, with his life hanging in the balance.
In the meantime, the party attendees were issued a warning by investigating officer DS Dasari – if he didn’t pull through, someone would be facing a murder charge.
But who pushed Joe? With all Joe’s enemies gathered in one place, there’s no shortage of suspects, from the obvious red herrings to those flying just far enough under the radar to make for a good plot twist.

Who pushed Joe out the window in Emmerdale?
1. Billy
If there’s a prime suspect to have attacked Joe, it’s Billy. Billy has no shortage of motives – not only did Joe break up his marriage thanks to his affair with Dawn, but he also threatened his daughter into silence.
As he proved when he (wrongly) accused Ross of being Dawn’s other man, Billy has a temper. And, as a former fighter, the required body strength too. The only thing with Billy is, he’s too obvious a suspect. Which leads us to our next could-be-culprit…

2. Clemmie
Joe made an enemy of Clemmie after she caught him kissing her mum. He attempted to buy her silence with a brand new karaoke machine, but Clemmie was having none of it – and took the thing to bits to show she couldn’t be bought.
He retaliated by telling her that she’d be taken into care if she said anything about the kiss, reminding her how she’d bitten him during their initial confrontation. Not content with terrifying the poor child, he also got personal, describing her as ‘feral,’ and not a real part of the family. Charming.

3. Noah
After months of confusion over the matter, Noah was shocked to learn that Joe had been the one who spiked him. This, in turn, had led to February’s limo crash, which led to Noah blaming himself for the death of three women.
Good-natured Noah called the police rather than seek immediate revenge, and was forced to look on as the police came and went without incident. Could Noah have lashed out in frustration, pushing his half-brother out of the window?

4. Charity
Charity Dingle is one of Joe’s original haters, being mistrusting of her one-time stepson ever since he returned to the village. She’s always suspected that he was involved in Noah’s spiking, but was unable to get the evidence she needed until now.
She put a plan of revenge into motion at the party, spiking Joe’s drinks. However, the police turned up before he could drink it, spoiling her carefully laid plans. So what next? Might Charity have snuck upstairs to finish the job?

5. Dawn
Dawn Fletcher left her husband for Joe following a lengthy affair behind his back. Decision made, she was looking forward to a life of glamour with her rich new man. However, that came crumbling down last night as she learned that he’d threatened her daughter and lied about his health problems.
Even if Dawn didn’t push Joe herself, there’s always the possibility that she might be covering for the person who did – Clemmie, perhaps, or even little Lucas.

6. Kerry
Turning up for a party, Kerry Wyatt was left shocked at the bombshell that Joe could have been indirectly responsible for daughter Amy’s death. It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that the always-volatile Kerry could have nipped upstairs to take her revenge.
And she was acting mighty suspiciously as of Friday’s episode – fleeing the scene of the crime and then stashing a mystery object in her home. Kerry, what have you done?

7. Matty
Like Kerry, Matty Barton was left heartbroken when Amy died in the Valentine’s Day limo crash. He hasn’t been seen much since then, quietly supporting his mum in her cancer recovery while managing his own pain.
And, like Kerry, he was shocked to hear that Joe may have had a part in Amy’s death. Might Matty have taken violent action?

8. Caleb and Ruby
Ruby and Caleb Miligan looked like the cats who’d gotten the cream on Friday, relishing every bit of Joe’s position. And Caleb has more motive than most, having lost a literal kidney to his scheme.
All water under the bridge, if his deal with Kim Tate is anything to go by, but would he and Ruby really kill again, so soon after the whole Anthony situation? No, it seems as though they’re more content to wind everyone else up and watch the damage unfold from afar – this time, at least.

9. Manpreet
Poor Manpreet found herself wrapped up in Joe’s scheming after he ‘saved’ her from blackmail. Accepting his cash to pay off her blackmailer, Manpreet was in Joe’s debt, and assisted him in an off-the-books blood test for Caleb.
Manpreet was appalled to learn that she’d become a pawn in Joe’s games and, as she confided in Liam on Friday, was full of genuine fear and regret. Anger too.
But could that anger have turned to violent rage, pushing Joe out of the window? A little far-fetched, perhaps, but Manpreet never fails to surprise.

10. Kim
They may have been united as she helped Joe buy off the Miligans, but Kim doesn’t trust her sort-of grandson, even going so far as to bug his room in an attempt to find out what he was up to. While she seems genuinely determined to find out who attacked Joe, this could well be a bluff.
Of everyone at the party, Kim’s the one with the most Tate blood on her hands. Just ask Frank.

11. Cain
Cain Dingle already left Joe at death’s door once – flooring him with a punch which left apparently killed him. Joe had survived his run-in with Cain though, living to scheme another day.
Cain has mellowed a bit these days, and seemed more willing than anyone to move on from Joe’s kidney theft. Let’s face it, Cain is all talk and, where Joe Tate is concerned, he’s not even that.

12. Pollard
Another one on the Amy train, Eric Pollard looked upon Amy like a daughter. He was left devastated along with Kerry and Matty when she died. And, were this the Emmerdale of twenty or thirty years ago, we’d have him pegged among the suspects.
But Pollard’s a different man these days, and his talk of revenge on Friday leads us to believe his days of wrath are behind him. Still, one should never count wily Pollard out…

13. Jimmy
Walking plot device Jimmy was only there to remind partygoers (and viewers) how his dad had once been pushed out of a window at Home Farm, back in 2006. Without motive or the personality for it, we can safely clear Jimmy of any real wrongdoing.
What he may have done, however, is inspire Joe’s attacker, with all that talk of pushing rich white people out of windows.

14. Vinny and Gabby
Love’s young dream, Vinny and Gabby were in particularly loved-up mode at the party. Again, neither one has motive – even if Gabby would probably approve of there being a bit more Home Farm inheritance to go around, with Joe out of the picture.

15. One of the (other) Dingles
Given that the party was in celebration of Lydia, there was no shortage of Dingles to go around. This included honorary Dingle Paddy, who was steaming drunk (and probably innocent, unless he drunkenly shouldered Joe out of a window).
Also probably innocent – Chas (sure, Liam was hurt, but she’s got more important things to deal with, like his multiple head traumas), Belle (give the girl a rest after her Tom King experience) and Sam, who was sharing a dance with Kim when the crime occurred.
