“I Will Miss It Terribly” — It Sounds Like Luke Grimes Is Moving On From ‘Yellowstone’ Franchise After Season 5

Yellowstone star Luke Grimes has offered a reflection on the series ending with season 5,

speaking about how long he’s been on the show. Grimes portrays Kayce Dutton, the estranged son of

John Dutton (Kevin Costner) who is the most rebellious of the siblings. He has been on the show since

its first episode and will be reprising the role in the rest of season 5, expected to air later this year.

Speaking with People, Grimes reflected on how Yellowstone season 5 part 2 will be the end of the show. The actor discussed how much the series has been part of his life for the last seven years, revealing how much he’ll miss being part of the show. Check out what Grimes had to say below:

For seven years, we’ve been doing this, and we started in 2017. That’s crazy. This cast and crew, they’re like a second family, we spend a lot of time together. It’s been one of the most intense experiences of my life. Also, one of the most rewarding. It’s changed my life in every way possible.

Nothing will ever be the same because of this show in all sorts of ways, good and bad. I will miss it terribly. I know that. I mean, I think I’m ready to know how it ends. I’m ready to tell the end of the story.

Although the popular Western series is expected to end in November 2024, the franchise will continue far beyond the main series. A Yellowstone sequel starring Matthew McConaughey, titled 2024, is planned to air not long after the original series finishes. 1923 season 2 has also been promised, alongside sequel series 1944 and the modern-day 6666, which will take place at the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas.

In February 2024, it was reported that Grimes was in talks to reprise his role as Kayce for 2024, however there’s been no confirmation of his return. Other Yellowstone cast members reported to be in negotiations for the sequel are Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler and Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton. While Grimes is no doubt sad to see the show end, the possible presence of three actors in the sequel means its legacy can live on in more than just name.

Given the number of spinoffs Yellowstone has planned, the series could continue for a long time, even after the main show comes to a close. While the popular Western’s ending will be bittersweet, the fact that its universe will continue to expand means the stories of the Dutton family are far from over. With only one batch of episodes left, there’s no telling how the show will end, or if it will directly lead into its forthcoming sequel.
