Coronation Street’s Sam Aston has shared some behind-the-scenes insights, revealing the “daft” behaviour of co-star David Neilson that often leads to laughter on set.
Sam, known for his role as Chesney Brown, opened up about working with David, who plays the iconic Roy Cropper, saying that David’s off-screen humour sometimes makes it difficult to maintain composure during filming.

He responded with high praise: “He’s great, he’s really funny because he’s so different (to his character, Roy Cropper) and he’s very dry.”

Sam went on to describe how David’s habit for making his colleagues chuckle can be a bit of a hindrance when the cameras are rolling, saying: “It’s just one of them, it’s hard to do a scene with him sometimes, because he’ll do it on purpose, he’ll do something really daft on the back of a shot and you’re trying to keep a straight face.”

As Sam expressed his fondness for the Corrie veteran, he also touched upon how their characters’ storylines have been closely linked down the years. Roy and his late wife Hayley were pivotal in Chesney’s upbringing within the show’s narrative.
Reflecting on his early days on the soap with David, Sam fondly recalled: “Him and obviously Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh), you know they were kind of the parent figures to Chesney when obviously he was having a real rough time at home. He took me to karate lessons, we did all sorts, it was brilliant.”
Following the departure of his on-screen mother, Cilla Battersby (played by Wendi Peters) to Vegas, Chesney and his elder sister Fiz (portrayed by Jennie McAlpine) were often left in the care of anyone willing, with Roy and Hayley frequently stepping in during their younger years.

Chesney has since moved past any childhood discomfort, having established a family of his own with his wife Gemma Winter. The couple share five children, one of whom is from a previous relationship.
However, Sam’s recent expression of admiration for the Corrie stalwart isn’t unique, as Roy continues to be a beloved character among soap fans.

Roy has been instrumental in some of the soap’s most significant storylines over the years. One that fans will likely recall is the heartbreaking loss of his wife, Hayley, following a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer in 2014.
In more recent times, David’s character was implicated in the murder of Lauren (Cait Fitton), only to be exonerated after a stint in prison for her murder.
