1. Five flashforward scenes air
As New Year’s Eve arrives in the village, viewers get a tantalising glimpse at the future as five different flashforward scenes air.
For now, show bosses are keeping quiet about which characters will feature and the future storylines which will be revealed.
2. Leyla stands in the way of Jacob and Sarah
Jacob is delighted when he manages to arrange a date with Sarah, but his mum Leyla throws a spanner in the works by insisting that he should have lunch with her instead.
Jacob is forced to cancel his original plans with Sarah, but was this a deliberate ploy on Leyla’s part to stand in their way?
3. Jacob struggles at the hospital
Emmerdale airs a special episode on Thursday, January 2 which focuses entirely on Jacob’s experiences while on a medical student placement at A&E.
With the pressure on and familiar faces making an appearance at the hospital, Jacob struggles to cope and he ends up being reprimanded by one of his superiors.
Will the difficult time cause Jacob to question his own abilities?
4. Chas worries about Ruby
Chas notices that Ruby is drinking more heavily than usual and that she also seems agitated. Viewers know that Ruby is facing a tough time following the arrival of her father Anthony, who sexually abused her when she was a child.
As Chas tries to find out what’s going on, Ruby decides to bravely break her silence.
Meanwhile, Anthony discovers a secret.
5. Marlon struggles to cope
It’s a difficult start to the New Year for Marlon as he remains in turmoil over April’s disappearance.
