EastEnders has confirmed the dissolution of Elaine and George Knight’s marriage, a mere few months after their nuptials, with the couple parting ways on Thursday (June 12).
This week saw Elaine (Harriet Thorpe) worn out by George’s (Colin Salmon) incessant deceit concerning his former wives. Upon discovering that George had been assisting Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) in reviving The Albert, she became suspicious of an affair between them.
The Queen Vic’s landlady also unearthed that George had paid a visit to his other ex-wife, Sabrina, on Christmas night, which left her seething.
While at The Albert, Elaine found company in a charming man named Stephen, leading to a one-night stand.
However, upon her return home, a remorseful George was eager to apologise and reconcile, leaving a guilt-ridden Elaine realising she was the sole party guilty of infidelity, as reported by Belfast Live, reports OK!.
As preparations were underway for Kat (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie Moon’s (Shane Richie) wedding reception, Elaine confessed to Linda (Kellie Bright) about her tryst with Stephen. Encouraged by her daughter to be honest with George, Elaine eventually admitted to her husband about her infidelity.
In the most recent episode, George was taken aback by this revelation, leaving Elaine alone in the barrel store as he grappled with his wife’s betrayal.
Drama peaked in Walford as Elaine vehemently rejected the idea of bearing sole responsibility for recent turmoil. Opening up, she expressed how Stephen’s attention had made her feel appreciated, while George’s duplicity eroded her self-confidence.
Subsequently, despite being enticed by Elaine’s suggestion to begin anew in Marbella, George firmly announced that their relationship was damaged beyond repair.
A touching scene unfolded when Elaine gave George the boxing gloves from his first championship victory – a gesture he found moving, yet it didn’t prevent him from leaving The Vic with his belongings, signalling the end of their union.
Meanwhile, seasoned EastEnders viewers are hypothesising that George might have already planned his exit, contemplating if there’s potential for him to rekindle his romance with Cindy as both seem unable to stay apart.
Their tangled past involves Cindy entering into matrimony with George under the assumed identity of Rose Knight during her time in witness protection. She ultimately left him and their offspring in Spain following Lucy Beale’s death in 2014.
In a chance turn of events, both were drawn back to Walford in 2023. With Elaine out of the picture, is there room for old flames to be reignited between George and Cindy in Albert Square?
Audiences have taken to social media to share their views on the unfolding drama. One exasperated fan vented online, “If the end goal is to put George and Cindy together then why didn’t you do that ages ago? Why are we still being subjected to watch this nonsense?”.
A second viewer contributed: “It’s time to free Elaine! She deserves better than George. Let him be with Cindy; it’s obvious that’s what he really wants.”
Another voiced their displeasure, stating: “He just annoys me now, simping after Cindy after all the crap she’s done and treating him like dirt and her behaviour. Get a grip!”.
Someone else foresaw a surprising development: “A possible reunion for George and Cindy”, while another was keen on a quick resolution, exclaiming, “Please just end this relationship! ! Cindy needs to be with George, Elaine needs to find another man and they’ll all be happy in the end #EastEnders.”
One fan was clear in their support, urging, “George and Cindy need to reunite at this point”, and yet another joined in with a word of caution, remarking, “Elaine shouldn’t trust George. He’s just gonna go back to Cindy again!”.
