This article contains spoilers for tonight’s episode of EastEnders, which
is already available on BBC iPlayer. Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) has found
herself behind bars in EastEnders, as she looks set to be framed for Debbie
Colwell’s death. Scenes earlier this week saw Sonia and fiancé Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) arrested at their engagement party on suspicion of murder. Reiss – who is Debbie’s real killer, having smothered his comatose wife in her care home bed in an attempt to solve his money troubles – was later released without charge, having an alibi for the night in question. With DNA evidence linking Sonia to the scene of the crime, and having no one to vouch for where she was around the time of Debbie’s death, she found herself charged with murder.
On Thursday’s episode, Sonia awoke in a holding cell, as news of her charge reached Albert Square. Ex-husband Martin Fowler (James Bye) and her uncle Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) were determined to get to the bottom of the matter, suspecting Reiss was the real culprit. However, when Jack visited Sonia in her cell, she was resolute that Reiss was innocent and begged to be able to see him. Jack was able to sneak him in, but pressured Sonia to ask him outright whether he killed Debbie, which he was swift to deny.
As Sonia then opened up about her fears of losing their baby while in custody, Reiss’ guilt bubbled to the surface, and he appeared to be on the brink of confessing. But just as Reiss said he had ‘something he needed to tell’ Sonia, they were interrupted by a guard waiting to transfer Sonia to the prison. Will actress Natalie Cassidy due to take a break from the soap, are we about to see Sonia go down for a crime she didn’t commit?
