Coronation Street fans have said they ‘get it’ after backlash over Debbie Webster’s long-running storyline.
Fans know that it was previously confirmed that the show will take on a huge health storyline that will eventually lead to a permanent exit from the ITV soap for Debbie Webster, and the actress who plays her Sue Devaney.
It was back in April that viewers saw Debbie growing concerned about her memory loss and booked an appointment at a private clinic, believing her symptoms may be related to the menopause.
At the end of April, Debbie was formally given her diagnosis and the neurologist confirmed that there was no medication to treat the illness.
After initially learning about the storyline, while supportive of tackling the hard-hitting subject, Corrie fans were up in arms that they would have eventually have to say goodbye to Debbie – and the actress who plays her, Sue Devaney.
During the latest episode of the ITV soap on Wednesday night (June 18). Debbie was seen attending the drag night at The Rovers alongside Bernie Winter, with the pair having grown close in recent weeks.
After taking herself outside, Debbie opened up to Bernie, saying that she’s finding it hard to be around Ronnie Bailey, after she ended their relationship after her diagnosis, which he still doesn’t know about.
So Bernie suggests they relocate to Debbie’s hotel for a drink. But things took a dramatic turn when Debbie saw Brody Michaelis drinking alcohol at the bar, leading her to go over and demands he show her some ID.

When Brody refused, Debbie loses her temper and smashed his drink on the bar. The teen threatened to go to the police before Debbie ended up having another emotional outburst at Bernie, who had defended the youngster, with people unaware that she could be his grandmother.
Later, chatting to half-brother Carl, Debbie recognised her symptoms of anger are growing and that it’s really getting to her.
Following the scenes, while still heartbroken at the character’s slow detoriation, many Corrie fans were full of praise for actress Sue and shared that they understand soap bosses decision to give her the storyline.
@swarlanations said: “I get it, I get why Sue Devaney was chosen for the dementia storyline. She’s extraordinary, but I wish they’d have given the storyline to other Sue, given that Eileen was actually leaving. I just can’t imagine #Corrie without Debbie Webster.”
@agf1052 replied: “Sue Devaney has made an incredibly large impact on Corrie. I am dreading the day she leaves.” @beckalou90 shared: “I just can’t see any other character pulling it off the way she will. Dementia is a b**ch. Sue is gonna break my heart a thousand times during this story I just know she’s gonna smash it. The world will be a less colourful place without Debbie Webster.”
@Raq91x added: “Considering we’re only in the early days of this Debbie storyline it’s already KILLING me, ar Sue really is sensational. #Corrie.”
