As previously reported, Casey returns in Chicago Fire season 11 in light of Kelly Severide’s abrupt leave of absence. Taylor Kinney requested some personal time off in the middle of the current year causing NBC and Wolf Entertainment to readjust the show’s storytelling.

NBC and Wolf Entertainment wrote him out in a way that he could always come back, but it was not expected to re-incorporate him into the show this quickly.
