Tom King is ready to reach exorbitant levels of control in Emmerdale, putting Belle Dingle in grave danger. After surviving his near-death experience with the metal pipe incident, Tom discovered that Belle had secretly had an abortion rather than a miscarriage. This revelation was a stomach punch to Tom, showing how little control he still had over his wife’s behavior.
Tom’s attempts to dominate Belle’s life by controlling her finances, keeping her away from her family, selling her car, and even making their dog ill have all failed to give him complete control. Now, Tom is pulling out all the stops to banish Belle from the village for good.
The Dingle women—Charity, Emma Atkins, Chas, Mandy, and Lydia—begin to suspect something is wrong with Belle’s marriage. They start raising doubts about Belle’s connection with Tom, seeing the indicators of trouble. Charity is determined to persuade Belle to talk, but Belle rushes off in a rage at their incessant probing.
Charity discovers a distraught Belle outside the bar and makes a desperate attempt to get her to open up. However, as soon as Tom shows up, Belle becomes defensive. Emma Atkins thought that over time, Belle found Tom too squeaky clean and smarmy, always saying the right thing. To the outside world, he appears to be a kind, honorable person, but Belle begins to sense something is off.
When Belle sees Tom approaching, she shoves Charity and runs for her life. Tom stops Charity from following Belle, citing a period of bad mental health, leaving Charity speechless. The warning signs are multiplying. Charity knows something is off, even though the other women try to dismiss her concerns as being too sensitive.
Belle fears Tom’s moodiness while they are alone. Answering the phone, Tom verifies the next leg of his plan—an interview for a job in Wales. The interviewer informs Tom that the position is in a very isolated and rural area, which he couldn’t be happier about. He’s going to whisk Belle off to Wales and lock her up.
Tom offers to take Belle on a vacation, planning to lure her to a secluded cottage and keep her from returning home. Charity, suspecting foul play, designs a plan with the Dingle women to help Belle. They plan a “girly night” to cheer Lydia up, secretly intending to rescue Belle from Tom’s grasp.
In a dramatic episode, the Dingle women whisk Belle off to the Woolpack’s back room, providing a safe space for her to open up. Charity confronts Belle, questioning why Tom is calling during their girly night. As Belle starts to open up, Tom’s controlling behavior becomes more evident.
Next week’s episode may feature a shocking twist as Tom King meets his match. After learning the truth about Belle’s abortion, Tom becomes enraged and starts hurling an iron bar around a barn. In his fury, he accidentally electrocutes himself, resulting in his death.
This calamity occurs just as Belle gathers the resolve to leave Tom and the community. She seeks support from her mental health care coordinator, who advises her to move away. Planning to live with her niece Debbie Dingle, Belle decides to leave Tom.
Unbeknownst to Belle, Tom discovers her plan to leave. As she packs her belongings, he lashes out violently, swinging an iron bar. In a dramatic turn of events, the metal bar collides with a rotary isolator, electrocuting Tom and flinging him against a beam, leading to his death.
Viewers have found the abuse subplot between Tom and Belle disturbing, with Tom’s behavior worsening over the months. From installing a tracker on Belle’s phone to poisoning their dog, Tom’s control over Belle has been sinister. The audience is relieved that someone is finally paying attention to his actions.
