When it comes to The Young and the Restless’ Phyllis, you never know

which version you’ll encounter. There’s the typical Genoa City resident,

perhaps a bit more ambitious than most, just trying to navigate life’s challenges.

Then there’s the dangerous, unpredictable Phyllis, who will go to

any lengths to get what she wants. This latter version is someone Christine has had literal run-ins with, and we all remember how intense Phyllis’s feud with Diane became.

It turns out that this intense side of Phyllis is exactly what Michelle Stafford needed when she submitted her scenes for a 2024 Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress. In a conversation with Soaps.com, Stafford shared that there was a scene with Susan Walters’ Diane that was particularly powerful. In it, Phyllis gets right in Diane’s face, saying, “You should be afraid of me.” Stafford admitted, “I was watching it like, bleep, I’m afraid of you.”

It’s no surprise that this scene resonated deeply with both Stafford and the Emmy judges. The Phyllis vs. Diane conflict has been one of her favorite storylines in recent years and has pushed her to new heights as an actress. Stafford explained that playing Phyllis as she loses her mind over Diane was incredibly challenging. “I had to bring a lot to the day because I don’t live in that space of being so jacked up,” she said. Additionally, Stafford was dealing with personal physical issues at the time, which she had to incorporate into her performance—a unique challenge for any artist.

However, Stafford emphasizes that while real-life experiences must be incorporated into one’s character, it’s crucial to leave the character behind when you go home. Especially when the character is as volatile as Phyllis. “I’m better at that now,” she said about keeping Phyllis out of her personal life. “I used to not be so good at it, but I’m very good at it now because I’m a mom, and Phyllis has no business at the Stafford household.” She pointed out that method acting isn’t conducive to her life as a mother, emphasizing, “Phyllis may be threatening people, scaring Diane, faking her death, and killing the occasional co-conspirator, but that’s for Genoa City and only Genoa City.”

Stafford makes it clear that she has to leave Phyllis behind when she heads home because her life involves going to volleyball games, making sure her kids do their homework, and handling all the other responsibilities of being a mom. “That’s my life, and there’s no place for her there,” she concluded.

This revelation about Michelle Stafford’s approach to balancing her intense role on The Young and the Restless with her real-life responsibilities adds a new layer to our understanding of her as both an actress and a person.
