While the town of Virgin River plays a pivotal role in the series,

it’s important to clarify that Virgin River is a fictional town created by author Robin Carr for her novels. The show’s filming locations, however, are very real, and they provide the picturesque backdrop that brings this enchanting story to life.

1. Is Virgin River a Real Town?

Virgin River is purely a product of fiction. It exists solely in the imagination of its creator, author Robin Carr. When asked about the town’s location, Carr explained, “People always write and say, ‘Where is it? I want to go there,’ and I have to remind them that it only exists in our hearts and minds.” Carr envisions Virgin River nestled among the redwoods of Northern California, where waterfalls flow freely, and fishing is a cherished pastime.

2.Where Was Virgin River Filmed?

The real filming locations for “Virgin River” are primarily situated in British Columbia, Canada, specifically in Vancouver and its surrounding areas. The series beautifully captures the essence of a small, close-knit community in these picturesque locations. Here’s a breakdown of some key filming spots:

1. Snug Cove, Bowen Island

This charming location on Bowen Island plays a significant role in the series. It is not only where Melissa shoots her infamous Wicker Man remake but also serves as a pivotal setting in “Virgin River.”

2. New Westminster

Home to Doc Mullins’ clinic, New Westminster offers the perfect backdrop for various scenes in the series.

3. Burnaby

Scenes set at the Mayor’s house and Paige’s food truck are filmed in Burnaby, contributing to the show’s authenticity.

4. Port Coquitlam

This location features various shops and bars that make appearances throughout the series.

5. Richmond

Richmond doubles as Steveston Harbour, further enhancing the show’s small-town atmosphere.

3.Mel’s Waterside Cabin in Virgin River

Mel’s iconic waterside cabin, where many memorable moments occur, is located in Murdo Frazer Park on Vancouver’s North Shore. This stunning spot has also been featured in other  series, including “Fringe,” “The Flash,” and “Once Upon a Time.” The cabin’s interior scenes are filmed on a soundstage, using high-resolution photos of the real surroundings as backdrops.

Location manager and scout W. Robert ‘Fluffy’ Millar shed light on the cabin’s history, noting that it required refurbishment due to sinking into the soft earth near the water table. The District of North Vancouver received a heritage grant to address this issue, ensuring the cabin remains a part of “Virgin River’s” enchanting world.

4.Jack’s Bar in Virgin River

Jack’s bar, where Mel first encounters Jack, is portrayed by the Watershed Grill in Brackendale, just north of Vancouver. While the interior scenes are filmed on a soundstage, the exterior overlooks the scenic Squamish River. The location offers breathtaking views and is near the largest concentration of bald eagles globally, providing a natural spectacle for visitors.

Despite the seamless transition between the exterior and interior scenes, it’s intriguing to note the difference in perception. Drone shots from the river portray a narrower view, while the soundstage reveals a spacious interior with a fireplace, billiards table, and more.
