Coronation Street fans have said what they ‘need to see’ in upcoming scenes as the actress who plays Betsy Swain hinted at her character’s future.

Actress Sydney Martin joined the ITV soap in her debut TV role as the new teenage character last summer and has quickly made an impact in Weatherfield.

She originally applied for two smaller roles at the beginning of 2024, before later being invited to apply for the role of Betsy two weeks later, which she was given after a two-month audition process.

Betsy arrived on the Cobbles amidst the shocking Joel Deering and Lauren Bolton grooming storyline and it was soon revealed that she was the daughter of DS Lisa Swain.

She soon ruffled feathers amongst some on the cobbles, landing herself a job at Underworld with Carla Connor. Since then, Lisa has got into a relationship with the factory boss and fans have been hopeful of seeing the trio blossom as their own little family.

But challenges keep being thrown their way, the latest being the return of Carla’s brother Rob Donovan. The convicted murderer returned to Weatherfield to have one last showdown with his sister, weeks after he went on the run.

We’ve since seen Betsy lash out at both Carla and Tracy Barlow, blaming them both for the hostage situation with Rob. As seen last week, Betsy wasn’t happy after earlier railing at Tracy Barlow over the shooting, which saw her injured when her mum fought Rob for the gun.

There has since been some issues at home for the new Swain-Connor clan, with Carla not pandering to Betsy while Lisa feels guilt for what has happened with her daughter. It was during Wednesday’s (April 30) episode that a frustrated Carla was left looking after Betsy at the flat to help out Lisa.

But Sydney has hinted that there’s happier times ahead for them in Weatherfield. Speaking to Inside Soap, she was asked how recent events have changed Betsy, to which she said: “She’s been through so much loss, and she feels so defeated.

“It’s just one thing after another, and there has to be a breaking point where it all gets too much for her. Everything that’s happened this year has taught her to grow up. She has to learn that she can’t be a stroppy teenager forever.”

And as for Betsy’s future, Sydney thinks that she’ll soon be building more relationships with those around her. She shared with the publication: “I just want to see her growing up. What happens when she turns 18 and she goes to the clubs and comes home drunk? Those years would be fascinating to watch and would really resonate with a younger audience.”

The soap star added: “I’d also be excited to do a bit more with Ryan Prescott [who plays Ryan Connor] – there’s a sibling bond there that I think would be a good opportunity to play with.”

And it’s the later part of Sydney’s chat that caught Corrie fans’ attention. @ameliasbrennan said: “MORE SCENES WITH RYAN & A SIBLING BOND!!!!!!! CARLA MOTHER FIGURE!!!!!!! SWAIN CONNOR FAMILY WE ARE SO BACK.”

@kristensidina pleaded: “Betsy and ryan sibling bond/relationship i need to see it i’m begging.” @carlasmissus wrote: “Also betsy ryan bond.. yes please.” @Thasmin124 added: “Ryan would have been the perfect person for Betsy to connect with. Traumatic incident ending with life changing injuries. They could have bonded over a shared experience.”
