A sneak peek at Wednesday’s episode shows Firehouse 51 responding to what appears to be a routine house fire

This season of Chicago Fire has not been easy for Kelly Severide

(Taylor Kinney)—and it doesn’t look like it’s about to get any better.

A sneak peek at Wednesday’s episode shows Firehouse 51 responding

to what appears to be a routine house fire. The rescue squad enters the burning building after discovering a victim is still trapped inside, and Severide is instructed to search the top floor. From outside, Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) notices the roof is about to cave in and orders his men to evacuate the blaze.

“Emergency! Everybody out!” he shouts into his radio.

The entire team complies except for Severide, who stands frozen in a smoke-filled bedroom, seemingly oblivious to what’s going on. Seconds later, the ceiling collapses on top of him. Then the screen goes dark, leaving us to wonder whether the Lieutenant will make it out alive.

This is one of many devastating blows that the NBC drama has delivered to Severide. Last month, his character experienced a loss that left even fans wondering why the show seemed to have it out for him. Severide had a heated argument with his father, Benny (Treat Williams), and it turned physical. Soon after, the old man suffered a stroke and died. Benny passed away just minutes before Severide arrived at the hospital to say his final goodbyes, leaving the fatherless son heartbroken and alone.

Kinney’s troubled character has experienced quite a bit of pain over the years, from breakups to deaths, and some people are wondering if the series—which is now in its seventh season—might be taking things too far.

Find out Severide’s fate in the newest episode, “The Solution to Everything,” on Wednesday at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
