Emmerdale star Ned Porteous has shared some secrets about Joe Tate and Caleb Miligan’s recent fight scene.
This week, Caleb put together a number of clues and finally found out the truth that Joe had secretly stolen his kidney.
Confronting Joe at Home Farm, Caleb pretended to go in for a hug and proceeded to punch Joe in his surgery wound before throwing a bloodied Joe across the room.
Speaking on ITV’s Off Script podcast, Porteous opened up about the big fight, saying: “You like to think of it as a collaboration but effectively, we’re the ingredients in a kitchen that is run by a director and a coordinator whose job it is to keep us all safe – and more importantly, the cameras don’t get damaged. Something that reads on camera.
“There’s a big difference between what we read on set and how we think it looks and we really want to try and tap in to what it looks like to be in a confrontation when you recently had an organ removed and you’ve been dealing with the pains of being on and off medication.
“The idea of someone putting pressure on a fresh wound and having lost a kidney as well, there’s all of that.”
He added: “It’s a big deal; it’s a bit of a shambles of a fight. You’ve got these two people; they’re knackered and in so much pain, trying to hurt each other. My character’s wanting to be like please don’t kill me but I don’t want to appear too scared of you.”
On what went on behind-the-scenes, he added: “You almost want the take to be the first one. If it comes down to the rehearsal, the actors work out quite quickly, the rehearsal is not for you, it’s for all the important people.
“I don’t really like to go full into it but I show the camera people were my marks are and I show the audio people how loud I am going to be … If you’re lucky to get that in one take, that’s where the magic happens.”
