Coronation Street fans feel like they’re ‘back in the early 2000s’ as they spoke out on the return of a former on-screen relationship.

Fans were delighted earlier this year when Sarah Platt and Todd Grimshaw reconnected. The pair had a romance over 20 years ago, and Sarah became pregnant with Todd’s baby.

Sadly baby Billy died after Sarah went into premature labour and more recently, a poignant scene saw Todd and Sarah talking about their little boy, and how he would now be 21 years old.

It left Corrie fans quick to praise the soap for remembering their former relationship and Todd actor Gareth Pierce later commented on the ‘forgotten’ connection being revisited as he shared his joy over working with Sarah star Tina O’Brien.

“That’s one of the dear relationships that I’ve really missed not getting quite as much screen time more recently,” he said. “They do have this rich shared history and big, big stuff together in their past.

“Tina and I get on brilliantly and we did have the opportunity of some quite nice connection when I first took over as Todd.

“But it was sort of, say, five to six significant scenes over time rather than really getting lots of time together in one or two blocks. So, yeah, I definitely missed that and it’s been brilliant to have that opportunity again.

“And it seems like the audience are quite excited about that prospect as well. So we’re doing more now and I think they can just be really great confidants for each other because they really, really understand and get each other.”

He added: “Since Todd’s coming out, they’re not in any way going to be together romantically, so actually there’s a real honesty that they can have with each other. They can, you know, make each other’s dating choices with quite a bit of insight.”

Corrie fans have now seen in recent weeks that Sarah is being a support for Todd as he carries out a secret romance with scaffolder Theo Silverton.

Todd was instantly attracted to Theo but received a number of mixed messages, with the newcomer eventually admitting to not being open about his sexuality due to his conservative parents. However, Theo later arrived at Shuttleworths and was there to arrange a funeral for his mother-in-law as it was revealed he had a wife, Danielle, as well as two kids.

But Sarah’s involvement in Todd and Theo’s secret romance is set to get messy in upcoming scenes, with it now assumed that Sarah is Todd’s girlfriend.

But following the latest trip to Weatherfield, Corrie fans were happy to see more of Sarah and Todd as an on-screen partnership. @its0l_ said: “Todd telling Theo about him and Sarah – ohhh we are going back to the early 2000’s #ClassicCorrie #Corrie.”

@NatalieCox101 posted: “sarah and todd being friends all these years later despite their history is so sweet #Corrie.” @swarlatakenover shared: “Can I just say. I do love Todd and Sarah’s friendship. #corrie.”

Others, however, were seemingly distracted by a blunder. @DavidHe47935675 asked: “Did Sarah just call Todd Daniel? #Corrie.” @JFAULEYHANCOCK replied: “I wondered about that.”

@ShirleyAFields9 commented: “I rewound it to check n she did.” @marilyn00940063 added: “Yes , thought my hearing was playing up for a minute , she did say Daniel.”
