Coronation Street fans should brace for major drama as Abi Webster is set to engage in an affair with her brother-in-law Carl. Sally Carman, 43, has played Abi since 2017 and her character married iconic character Kevin Webster, played by Michael Le Vell, in 2021.

But there is set to be trouble in paradise as Abi is tipped to engage in an affair with Kevin’s brother, Carl – played by Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World actor Jonathan Howard, 38. Soap fans watching the ITV show on Friday night saw Abi and Carl flirt when he arrived on the cobbles for the first time.

However, Abi was then startled to realise Carl was in fact her brother-in-law – setting up an awkward new storyline. Fans will already be aware that Kevin is battling testicular cancer – and the character could be set to endure emotional pain as those closest to him betray him.

Now Corrie star Sally has opened up about the dramatic scenes ahead. She said: “They had this shock meeting where they ran into each other in the car park and there was instant electricity, a spark.

“Then he turned up in her life and turned out to be Kevin’s brother, which was gutting because he’d awakened something in her. I think with Abi, with her being an addict, there was that rush, that adrenaline that she hasn’t had for a very long time. It completely turned her from red to blue.”

Hinting that Abi could destroy her marriage, Sally added: “Her life is calm and loving, and that is something she’s craved for. But a massive part of who Abi is is dangerous.

“There’s the addiction element; she thrives on risk-taking and danger. That part of her life, which was dormant, has now come up.”

She also teased that Kevin could end up pushing Abi into the arms of Carl as he pushes her away amid his health battle. Jonathan previously shared some details about his character.

After his casting was announced last month, Jonathan said in a statement: “Carl is Kevin and Debbie Webster’s little brother, they have different mums so he’s a bit younger than they are.

“He comes into Weatherfield to ostensibly be with his brother because he’s found out he’s got cancer but then we’ll discover Carl’s got some money issues back in Germany where he’s been living.”

Jonathan previously told Starburst magazine that his life dramatically changed when he was cast as Ian Boothby in Thor: The Dark World and starred alongside an A-List cast. He said: “For me, it’s game changing and goes to show how quickly things can change in this industry.

“I was out of drama school for a year before I got offered the part. The last six months I couldn’t book a job, and then it just happened. Getting the part has been the biggest highlight of my career. Then you’re on set and you’re doing scenes with Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins. You get talking to them and they’re really nice, down to Earth people.

“I was able to use my own nervousness and apprehension about working with these people for Ian, because as a character he’s of a nervous disposition; he’s not that clued up on life and knows a lot about science but not a lot else. It’s strange meeting someone like Christopher Eccleston, who’s one of my heroes. I first met him head to toe in his Malekith gear and he was all ‘All right mate, how are you doing?’ and as soon as he heard my northern accent we just got on well. He’s very funny, friendly and down to Earth.”
