Coronation Street Carl Webster star’s Hollywood roles and appearing in cult classic TV show

Coronation Street star Jonathan Howard offically arrived in Weatherfield for the first time to take on the role of Carl Webster.

The actor graced the cobbles with his presence on Friday (April 11), and was already off to a rocky start as he got into a fiery argument with Abi Webster.

Unaware of each other’s identities, they met at Freshco’s car park after they went for the same parking space and had a minor collision while making his debut on the ITV soap.

Ending up in a row, Abi punched Carl in the nose out of anger after informing him that her husband was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Kevin Webster was told he had testicular cancer earlier this year after noticing a lump. He underwent surgery to remove the testicle almost immediately, and since then he’s had chemotherapy.

Things have been tough for the whole family, with Abi suffering from PTSD and hallucinating her dead son Seb, and Debbie recently being told she could have early on-set dementia, it’s been an emotional few weeks.

Abi is shocked to learn that Carl is Kevin and Debbie’s younger brother, particularly as he flirted with her after the incident and asked her out for a drink.

Actor Jonathan Howard from Lancashire is not unfamiliar when it comes to appearing on the screen. He’s had roles in ITV’s Downton Abbey as Sam Thawley, and in Mr Selfridge.

Jonathan, 38, also appeared in cult classic Sky One sports drama Dream Team, where he starred as Gavin Moody, and appeared in 50 episodes of the show.

Away from the small screen, Jonathan is also no stranger to Hollywood. He’s secured roles in World War Z and Thor: The Dark World. Alongside his new part as Carl Webster, he’ll be appearing in The Dreadful with Sophie Turner and Kit Harington.

He’s married to long-term partner Elodie Yung who is also an actress. The couple also welcomed their daughter, Minavann, in 2018. The pair tied the knot during the pandemic, as Elodie shared: “The cute part was we had another couple of friends (who) were here. Our parents are in Europe, my mom is in Paris, and his mom is in the U.K.

“So Jonny had his mum on his phone, and I had my mom on my phone, and they were all dressed up. They made an effort! And this is how we did it, which was fun.”
