Coronation Street has seemingly revealed the unexpected adopter of Dee-Dee Bailey’s baby.
Dee-Dee (played by Channique Sterling-Brown) welcomed a baby girl named Laila earlier this week, with initial plans to hand over the child to her brother James (Jason Callender) who recently returned to the cobbles..
However, after her concerns were overlooked at the hospital, she found herself in a life-threatening situation when she collapsed post-delivery.
It was subsequently disclosed that she had experienced a haemorrhage, leading doctors to perform a hysterectomy to save her life. Consequently, Dee-Dee was informed she would not be able to bear children in the future.
The family was dealt another blow when James learnt that his partner Danny, currently in the States, had been involved in a severe car accident and was now in a medically induced coma, reports Leicestershire Live.
With Danny rushing off to America, the Bailey family faced a predicament as Ed (Trevor Michael Georges) would need to assume full responsibility for Laila in James’ absence.
Adding to the complexity, Dee-Dee was uncertain about living under the same roof as the baby, particularly since she intended to give her to James.
When left alone with Laila for a few hours, Dee-Dee found it overwhelming and reached out to friends Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) and Alya Nazir (Sair Khan).
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Dee-Dee confided in her mates about the distressing experience she endured, revealing her intention to file an official complaint against the hospital, suspecting that racial bias played a part in the way she was treated.
Meanwhile, with James now apparently out of the picture for adopting baby Laila, soap enthusiasts are piecing together their own theories on who might become the infant’s guardian.
On a Coronation Street fan page on Facebook, speculation is rife that Alya will be the one to take in the child, spurred by a subtle exchange in Thursday’s episode (April 3). While Dee-Dee caught some rest in another room, Alya and Sarah’s conversation about Dee-Dee’s malpractice case took an intriguing turn.
As Alya gently placed Laila into the cot, Sarah remarked: “Very natural at that.” Alya’s reply, “Mmm funny,” prompted Sarah to insist, “I mean it.” This interaction has led fans to believe they’ve picked up on a clue as to who will ultimately care for baby Laila.
The buzz on the Coronation Street Facebook fan page saw one viewer post: “Did anyone else notice Sarah telling Alya she’s a natural when she was holding Dee-Dee’s baby. Could she adopt the baby?” The sentiment resonated with others, as another fan declared: “I thought the same when it happened!” A third joined the chorus, expressing: “Yup, I’d love that for Alya.”
