After more than three decades in EastEnders, Natalie Cassidy has confirmed she is leaving the role of Sonia Fowler. However, the actress revealed that she had no control over how her character would exit Albert Square.
Speaking on her podcast Off The Telly alongside co-stars Patsy Palmer and Joanna Page, Cassidy admitted that actors rarely have a say in their character’s fate. While she made the personal decision to leave, producers ultimately decided how Sonia would depart. She explained, “You can make your own choice to go, but it’s down to them what they do.”
As EastEnders gears up for its milestone 40th anniversary, Sonia’s exit appears to be part of a dramatic and potentially tragic storyline. A devastating fire will engulf the Queen Vic, trapping several residents inside—including Sonia, who will go into labor during the chaos. With no clear escape, both she and her baby’s survival hang in the balance.
Speculation is growing that Sonia may not make it out alive, as executive producer Chris Clenshaw has hinted that her storyline will have long-term consequences for Walford. Whether Sonia and her baby will survive remains to be seen, but fans can expect an emotional farewell.
