Phil Mitchell takes huge step as EastEnders confirms all details of special episode

EastEnders has revealed more details about the special episode focussing on Phil Mitchell’s (Steve McFadden) mental health storyline next week, as he takes a huge step forward.

The character is currently receiving treatment in a mental health unit off-screen after a devastating suicide attempt during the BBC soap’s 40th anniversary episodes last month.

As previously announced, a one-off episode next week will follow Phil over the course of his four-week stay.

It will also feature a guest appearance from actor Keith Allen, who will play fellow patient Gaz.

New spoilers for the episode have now detailed how viewers will see Phil struggle to settle into the unit at first, reluctant to open up in his therapy sessions.

As the days go by, Phil meets Gaz and the pair soon bond over their shared life experiences.

However, Phil suffers a setback when he learns that his new friend will be leaving the unit.

Following scenes will then see Phil finally confront his inner trauma and attempt to understand what may have contributed to his depression and symptoms of psychosis.

As he makes huge strides, Phil’s support worker Yasmin then helps him see that he is ready to leave the unit.

As readies himself to return home, Phil listens to voicemails from ex-wife Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) and good friend Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley), before discharging himself.

Executive producer Chris Clenshaw previously said of the episode: ‘As Phil struggles to begin treatment, we explore how his relationship with fellow patient Gaz, helps Phil to take the first step in his road to recovery.

‘Keith and Steve’s performances are both phenomenal, and thoughtfully and sensitively portray the complex realities of mental health recovery and the impact of hypermasculinity.’

Ketih also said of his role as Gaz: ‘I’ve written a number one hit single, I’ve presented Top of the Pops, I’ve played the lead in the West End and I was at Craven Cottage when we beat Juventus 4-1…Could it get better than that?

‘Well, yes, I’ve just guested in an episode of EastEnders…What a joy! And what an honour to be a part of Steve McFadden’s incredibly moving story line. I may be a resting actor but I now rest in peace.’
