‘You’re dead to me’: Grant Mitchell destroyed in crushing EastEnders showdown in early iPlayer release

The following article contains spoilers from an episode of EastEnders that hasn’t aired on BBC One yet, but can be viewed on BBC iPlayer.

Last week in EastEnders, Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) and Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) found Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) in The Arches with a gun.

The beloved character wanted to end his life, but Linda, Nigel and Grant had arrived before he did anything.

Phil did pull the trigger on the gun, but nothing happened due to the weapon being empty. It meant Grant was able to grab the device and stop his brother from going through with the plan.

During these scenes and even prior to them, Grant had reacted in a bad way to his brother’s mental health struggles. If he wasn’t shouting at Phil and telling him to get a grip, Grant was telling everyone that his sibling didn’t have a problem.

The scenes in The Arches ended with Phil having a chat with a mental health nurse. In tonight’s episode, we learnt that Phil was continuing to receive help.

During a visit to the hospital, instead of seeing his brother, Grant went to see Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean). She was only recovering in a bed because Grant had saved her from the Queen Vic explosion.

As he sat down, Grant comforted Sharon when she cried about the ordeal and Martin Fowler’s (James Bye) death. Eventually, he knew in his mind visiting Phil was the right thing to do.

Joined by Nigel, Grant grabbed a chair and it soon became apparent that neither of them really knew what to say to Phil. Nigel waffled on and filled the silences while Grant hesitated time and time again, but did admit what Phil went through scared the life out of him.

A conversation about the past eventually prompted Phil to confront his brother. He said he’s never really been there for him, and then announced their relationship had come to an end.

‘You’re dead to me’, Phil said as he walked away.

The words hurt Grant a lot. Will he mend his relationship with his brother before he leaves?
