Emmerdale last night: ‘Brilliantly realistic’ or a ‘low-rent Casualty’ – fans in huge debate over Jacob standalone episode

In last night’s Emmerdale episode (January 2), the show once again provided a

unique standalone episode following Jacob Gallagher’s first day at his A&E placement.

While he was initially excited for the experience. His first day quickly turned into hell as he made a huge mess-up.

Things kept getting progressively worse for Jacob, and by the end of the episode he looked like he had been there for more than one day.

While Emmerdale was trying to highlight the importance of A&E workers, along with the stress on the healthcare system. The response seems to be divided.

Jacob Emmerdale episode was ‘realistic’

On one side of things fans praised the storytelling for how realistic it was. The A&E department was busy and chaotic – similar to the real life situations.

Fans praised the Emmerdale episode in the comments of their Instagram post.

One wrote: “It was very realistic! I’m an ex-nurse and saw this on the A&E wards with my own eyes. It’s a very stressful job.”

Another added: “It was an emotional episode today. Seeing it from different people’s eyes, who are all going through difficult times. Well done Emmerdale.”

A third viewer praised: “What a rollercoaster. Brilliant writing, acting and production.”

However, not everybody appeared to share the same thought process, as many others thought the episode didn’t actually need to happen.

Fans slam ‘low-rate Casualty episode’

After Jacob made the huge error of telling Marlon and Rhona that the teenage stab victim was April even though he didn’t see her, his boss gave him some harsh words – right in front of everyone else.

Viewers felt that wasn’t necessary and while he deserved to be told off, it should have happened in private.

A viewer commented: “I could have written this. Knew it wasn’t going to be April and the old guy was going to die. This was like a really low-rate Casualty episode.”

Others seemed to agree with this view. Another added: “That nurse would have been reported immediately. Mistakes happen and they are learned from. Damaging the confidence of a starter is not the way to go.”

A third simply wrote: “This episode was unnecessary and boring.”

While it may have gotten mixed reviews from the viewers, it seems the Emmerdale episode certainly got people talking.
