Jane Cox, who is renowned for her 23-year portrayal of Lisa on Emmerdale, bid farewell to the beloved character in 2019. Lisa, as the head of the Dingle family, was a kind and warm-hearted individual with an inner strength that shone through when faced with difficult circumstances. Throughout their lengthy marriage, Lisa and Zak encountered numerous challenges, but Zak’s affair with Joanie Wright (Denise Black) marked the end of their union.

Lisa and Zak are also parents to Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper), whose arrival was unexpected as Lisa was unaware she was expecting.

However, in 2019, the actress decided it was time to hang up Lisa Dingle’s coat for good, marking Jane Cox’s departure from Emmerdale, reports Leeds Live.

In scenes that had viewers reaching for tissues, Lisa disclosed to Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) that she had been diagnosed with a terminal heart condition known as amyloidosis. After returning from a trip to Scotland, she shared the news with the rest of her family.

Lisa and Zak were able to rekindle their love and planned to remarry in emotional scenes, but tragically, Lisa died on their wedding day.

Jane, who is now 71, was 67 when she felt it was the right time to leave the soap, driven by a persistent feeling that life had more to offer.

She confided to The Mirror: “I know if I hadn’t have left now I never would. Life is such an exciting thing, you never know what is around the corner. It was a big decision but I know it is the right thing. It is completely life-changing. But I decided I wanted to do different things.

“My mum died a couple of years ago, so it does make you think a lot about the big things in life. As you get older life feels shorter, although, of course, I am going to live to 150!”

Since her departure from the show in October 2019, Jane has embarked on a new path, studying reflexology. In a conversation with Inside Soap, she expressed that while she’s open to acting opportunities, she’s currently taking time to savour life.

“I’m available for acting roles, but at the moment I’m just chilling which is a luxury for me,” Jane divulged.

In a separate chat with Digital Spy, she quashed speculation about joining I’m A Celeb, clarifying that she doesn’t “consider [herself] to be a celebrity in that way.”

Emmerdale will reference Lisa Dingle in Thursday’s episode (October 17) as the village says goodbye to Zak Dingle. The tribute comes after actor Steve Halliwell passed away in December 2023, and the ITV soap honours the beloved character.
