Oscar nominee Robert Downey Jr worked closely 15 years ago with
Yellowstone’s Kelly Reilly on an award-winning project.
Downey Jr will be among the stars eagerly awaiting to find out if
he will be one of the lucky few to accept a prestigious accolade at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 10.
He is up for an award for Actor In A Supporting Role for portraying former acting United States Secretary of Commerce Lewis Strauss in the hit 2023 film Oppenheimer.
Long before the historical thriller, Downey Jr had been in a string of hit movies including the Iron Man franchise, The Judge, The Pick-Up Artist, Tropic Thunder and The Gingerbread Man.
It was in December 2009 though that Downey Jr embodied the iconic Detective Sherlock Holmes in the titular remake alongside a very familiar face.
In the Guy Ritchie directed adaptation, Holmes and his partner Dr John Watson (played by Jude Law) rejoice after sending serial killer Blackwood to the gallows.
But their pride is short-lived as they learn that Blackwood is back from the dead and they must track him down and send him back to the gallows.
While they get to grips with this mystery, Watson meets Mary Morstan (Kelly Reilly) who he falls madly in love with and wishes to marry.
Of course, Holmes wasn’t happy with the idea of someone taking away his precious Watson and left an unsavoury first impression.
Morstan shared she had been engaged but neither jilted the other as her old love had died, leaving her heartbroken.
Holmes later makes up for his poor manners by showing Mary that he really does care for Watson and ultimately, gives them his blessing.
Downey Jr is up against four other power houses in the world of film for the Oscars’ actor in a supporting role award.
His fellow nominees are Sterling K Brown for American Fiction, Robert De Niro for Killers of the Flower Moon, Ryan Gosling in Barbie and Mark Ruffalo in Poor Things.
But will Downey Jr be triumphant in taking home yet another trophy for Oppenheimer?
Oscars 2024 will air on Sunday, March 10, on ITV and ITVX.
