Appearing on tonight’s (August 28) The One Show to discuss her explosive return, Oberman opened up about her time on the soap.

Asked which was her favourite scene to film, Oberman told hosts Clara Amfo and Alex Scott that her most cherished memory involved being punched in the face by Barbara Windsor, aka Peggy Mitchell.

“For me, being pushed into Dirty Den’s open grave by Barbara Windsor was the [best]… I love this,” she said. “She punches me in the face, and then I fall into my husband’s grave. There was something so camp and so brilliant [about it].”

Oberman starred as Chrissie between 2004 and 2005, first arriving to look for her husband Den Watts. After murdering Den and covering up the crime, Chrissie was eventually imprisoned for the murder.

Teasing what’s in store for Chrissie, Oberman said it was a phone call with executive producer Chris Clenshaw that finally convinced her to reprise the role.

“The time was never right, and things were never right,” Oberman explained. “But this time, Chris, the new producer, rang me. I was free, he told me the storyline, I sat down for 30 minutes while he spoke to me, and I was like ‘yeah, I’m in!’”

“It was so brilliant,” she added.

Back when her comeback was announced, Oberman said in a statement: “Chrissie Watts was such a great character to play – a victim or a villain. She is a real fan favourite, so when Chris Clenshaw asked me to come back and revisit her and see what has happened in the last 19 years, I jumped at the chance.”
