Star says: “messy and complicated love triangle” in Virgin River

Mel and Jack’s relationship will continue to be the hottest gossip in the town of Virgin River when the Netflix series returns on November 27th. And no matter how hard they try, none of them will be excluded from the matter.

When asked how Jack will deal with his issues in Virgin River season two, Martin Henderson told TVLine, “Not very well.” And can you blame him? Just as the Marine was emotionally damaged and learning to open his heart to someone new, he ended up discovering that his ex-girlfriend is pregnant.

“As a character, Jack works primarily out of a sense of honor and duty,” says Henderson. “Being a Marine is an integral part of who he is, and that extends to his responsibilities as a future father and his desire to be there for Charmaine. Unfortunately, these duties are often at odds with what Mel would like, which creates a confusing and complicated triangle between the three. They’re all after certain things, and the negotiation is clumsy. Plus, Charmaine, of course, manipulates things to the best of her abilities. And so it’s up to Jack and Mel to navigate it in a way that honors themselves as well as each other.”

Alexandra Breckenridge, who plays Mel, also agrees with Henderson’s concerns about Charmaine. Thus, the actress confirmed that being pregnant is “a bit of a crazy part of the equation. The thing is, Charmaine’s base level is already a little crazy, and then she gets pregnant… by her ex-boyfriend… who she’s still in love with,” she says. “But these are characters that belong together. They are like magnets, no matter how many obstacles keep being thrown their way.”

But as much as Virgin River is the story of Mel and Jack’s romance, it’s also about the two characters overcoming their individual problems. Breckenridge acknowledges that Mel “really overcame a lot of the pain she experienced in season one and she learned to open her heart again. She is a survivor. She’s going to get back on her feet and make the best of it.”

As for Jack, Henderson says we’ll get into “some of the things he’s still struggling with in Iraq, the demons that torment him and how he tries to take it all down. Everything starts to bubble up as he feels the pressure of what he’s facing with Charmaine and the baby. And I’m glad we see more of that aspect of him. He is not just the hero of the novel. He’s flawed and he’s struggling.”

Producers are excited about season two

Finally, writer Sue Tenney teased fans: “You’ll see Jack and Mel fight their attraction in Season 2 and see what will happen if they succumb to it. You will see what this means for their future – and how that future becomes extremely complicated in the final moments of the season.”

“When it comes to their relationship, Jack and Mel continue to face obstacles in Season 2,” which hits Netflix on November 27, said producer Jocelyn Freid.

“Charmaine’s pregnancy continues to complicate their relationship and the choices they make, as does Mel and her past life with her husband,” Freid added. “But make no mistake, Mel and Jack’s connection is undeniable and they will fight to be together whatever it takes.” Check out the trailer below.
