Jesse Spencer returns for the ‘Chicago Fire’ season 10 finale – and that big wedding

It’s Wednesday in Chicago, and while there may not be new episodes on NBC today,

there’s certainly some good news coming out of the Windy City. Jesse Spencer will return

as Matt Casey for next month’s Chicago Fire season finale, PEOPLE can confirm.

And it’s exactly what you think it is: Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Stella Kidd’s (Miranda Rae Mayo) epic wedding. “Jesse Spencer understood the character very well – and especially the relationship that Casey had with Severide, that relationship of friendship – and he knew this character had promised to be at the wedding as Best Man ,” Chicago Fire co-showrunner Andrea Newman tells PEOPLE. “Jesse is like Casey: he’s a man of his word and he’ll make it happen. He completely connects with the character in that way.” Jesse Spencer Leaves Chicago Fire After 200 Episodes — But He Could Come Back: ‘A Perfect Circle’ Fans no doubt recall the original cast’s departure at the 200th episode last October, when Casey moved to Portland to become the legal guardian of Andy Darden’s two teenage sons, a Firehouse 51 firefighter died in the show’s pilot episode in 2012.

“We definitely had him in mind then that we would want him for the finale,” said co-host Derek Haas. “We had to depend on a very busy man’s schedule, but thank God he was able to do it.” Laughing, Haas added, “I’m pretty sure Andrea and I are going to kidnap him. You’ll wonder why Casey was tied to a chair at the wedding.” Chicago Flames: See the adorable way Severide revealed his engagement to Kidd Casey’s departure was especially shocking because he had finally gotten to know paramedic Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) after many seasons of build-up.

They decided to keep things going long term, and in March, Brett took a sabbatical from age 51 to spend more time with Casey in Portland. Killmer will also return for the big finale as well as the show’s next season. Chicago Fire has been renewed for an 11th season, and with the show’s solid weekly ratings, there’s no end in sight. This suits the people presenting it very well. “I think we have an ending in mind but we expect that ending to be pushed back until 2045,” said Haas. Chicago Fire airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC. The season finale airs on May 25.
