Matt Casey left midway through ‘Chicago Fire’ Season 10. Now, the ‘Chicago Fire’ Season
10 fall finale is here with a holiday special, and the episode certainly involves plenty of surprises.
Could Matt Casey possibly return? NBC’s One Chicago shows are finally returning after several
weeks of holiday hiatus in November 2021. And Chicago Fire Season 10 reportedly has a holiday special like no other season before it. The showrunner announced the Chicago Fire Season 10 fall season finale features plenty of holiday cheer and more than a few surprises. So, could Matt Casey return in the fall finale? Here’s what we know. Why is Matt Casey leaving ‘Chicago Fire’ Season 10? Jesse Spencer wanted to move forward without the show Viewers watching Chicago Fire Season 10 felt deeply saddened when Jesse Spencer’s beloved character, Matt Casey, exited the show. Casey was a mainstay and the lieutenant of Truck 81, but he said his goodbyes during the 10th season. So, why did Matt Casey leave Chicago Fire? The character had personal business to attend to.
The late firefighter Andy Darden had two young sons who needed guardianship, and they lived in Oregon. Casey agreed to care for the kids for a few years. But this meant leaving Chicago behind. As for Jesse Spencer, he chose to leave the show on his own accord. “It was a difficult decision because I’ve loved the show from the start, but there are other things that I would like to do in the future, and there’s some family that I need to take care of, and 18 years is a long time,” Spencer said during a press conference, according to TVLine. Is Matt Casey gone for good? Could he return for the ‘Chicago Fire’ Season 10 fall finale/holiday special? Fans want to know if Matt Casey is gone for good from Chicago Fire Season 10. Jesse Spencer noted he’s not opposed to returning in the future.
But, because he just left, we doubt he’ll return so soon. Plus, One Chicago Center posted the Chicago Fire Season 10 Episode 9 plot synopsis — and there’s no mention of Matt Casey. “Gallo, Violet, and Ritter debut their microbrewery business at Winterfest,” the synopsis notes. “Brett prepares to present her paramedicine program to an oversight panel. Firehouse 51 gets in the holiday spirit.” The photos for episode 9 also give zero indication that Casey’s back in action. Additionally, Casey’s “temporary” replacement, Jason Pelham, seems to be fitting in at the firehouse. It doesn’t seem like Casey will swoop back in to take his spot back from Pelham anytime soon. While Casey isn’t slated to return during the holiday special, that doesn’t mean he’ll never come back.
Spencer is open to the idea of returning in the future, and his long-distance relationship with Sylvie Brett is still alive and well. There’s some talk to suggest Casey may return once Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd have a wedding, but that certainly will not happen in the holiday special for season 10. Will Jason Pelham stay as Matt Casey’s permanent replacement? With Matt Casey out and Jason Pelham in, will Pelham stay with the firehouse and move in as the Truck 81 commanding officer? Showrunner Derek Haas spoke to TV Insider about how this “major storyline” progresses, so we bet we’ll hear plenty more about it during Chicago Fire Season 10 Episode 9. “That becomes a story going forward because the spot on Truck 81 is potentially open and [Stella Kidd] hasn’t come back to claim it as of the next episode,” Haas said. “That has its own issues and ramifications.” The Chicago Fire Season 10 fall season finale/holiday special airs Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
