the dramatic season two finale. Jack Sheridan (played by Martin Henderson) was shot in the stomach by an anonymous killer and viewers wanted to know if he survived. His new girlfriend Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge), appeared to arrive just in time- but will the pair stay together in the new season?

Virgin River has provided the perfect form of escapism for the past two seasons, but the second instalment ended on a huge cliffhanger.

Jack had been dealing with the fact he was fathering his ex-girlfriend Charmaine’s (Lauren Hammersley) unborn twins.

At the same time, he was trying to navigate his new and fragile relationship with nurse Mel, whose first husband died.

The season two finale saw Jack finally make his intentions clear to Charmaine, as he told her he was in love with Mel.

Charmaine did not take his decision lightly and she was determined to keep him involved in her life.

There are hopes that a wedding is on the cards, but there is nothing stopping the creators of the series from introducing a dramatic twist.

Fans have taken to Reddit to discuss whether they will be able to maintain a healthy relationship.

One said: “The cardinal rule of the romance novel genre has the main protagonists overcoming and having a happy ending. So yeah, I’m sure they will.

“However, since there are so many other good storylines in the books, I’m hoping that they and their problems don’t dominate until the show either is cancelled or is concluded.

“I know I want to see them happy as they are in the books, not just in time for the final episode, if that makes sense.”

The series is based on the books of the same name by Robyn Carr, and the couple end up staying together in the books.

But fans have commented on the “baggage” Jack carries with him in the form of his previous relationship.

One said: “The baggage is too much, the babies are a big wrench, two babies are a bigger wrench. Mel was right to run and Jack was wrong in trying to trap a vulnerable Mel.”

Another added: “The baby daddy storyline is the ultimate baggage and romance wrecker, a seemingly impossible hurdle to overcome.

“But yet, they ended up being written doubling down and going full steam ahead with their romance….which most fans are wanting to see further develop and deepen.

“It’s hard to see where they are going with this. But, because it’s romantic fiction genre I’m sure they’ll have some dramatic twist to this in a way to keep the romance propelling forward.”

There is a chance Charmaine’s babies will be the cause of the end of Jack’s relationship with Mel.

If he is constantly torn between two families, he may never be able to make either of them happy.

Yet, viewers are confident it will not be enough to break Mel and Jack down.

“And Mel too is a considerate person who has developed strong feelings for Jack. Neither of them are the type who’d let go.“There’s going to be some drama for sure, but they’ll make it. It might not happen in the next season, but by the end of it, they will get married, I’m positive.”
