Although the Chicago Fire fan community has theorized that Lieutenant Stella Kidd may be
pregnant, the direction the NBC drama is taking means that this storyline likely won’t happen just yet.
Chicago Fire follows the firefighters and EMTs working at the fictional Firehouse 51 in Chicago,
Illinois. The series is currently airing its 11th season and has been renewed for season 12. One prominent character among the ensemble cast is Stella Kidd, a talented firefighter who is a lieutenant and the officer in charge of Truck 81. During Chicago Fire’s season 11 run, fans have come up with a theory about Stella that may seem like a stretch but has viewers excited about this potential storyline. The theory originated during a conversation between Stella and Joe Cruz in episode 17. Cruz wonders how Stella balances her life as a lieutenant and Stella replies: “I don’t have to deal with the kids part…yet.” The pause before Stella says “yet” is a small moment, yet it has ultimately led Chicago Fire fans to believe that Stella is currently pregnant and keeping it a secret. Unfortunately, as exciting as this revelation may be, it is unlikely to be true.
There’s No One To Take Over Truck 81 On Chicago Fire The most significant reason why Stella is likely not pregnant on Chicago Fire is that her pregnancy would keep her from Firehouse 51 for at least half a year, leaving no one to take over Truck 81 company. As a lieutenant, Stella is in charge of Truck 81 company, and though she has many firefighters under her leadership, there isn’t any specific person who stands out as her replacement. This would not only cause turmoil within Firehouse 51, but it would also likely cause problems for Stella who would likely want to work until she physically could not anymore. Although the Stella pregnancy theory is persuasive, the problem of her position at the firehouse makes it far less likely. Stella only recently became a lieutenant in Chicago Fire season 9 and it would be unfortunate for showrunners to remove this title from her so quickly.
In a similar vein, Stella and Severide got married very recently, and season 11 has certainly focused on their struggles with working together as a married couple. If Stella were pregnant, this would be a very quick transition from dealing with married life to motherhood. Therefore, Stella’s pregnancy, if it happens, will likely be delayed to a later season. It’s Unclear When Kelly Severide Will Return To Chicago Fire Another major hole in this theory is Taylor Kinney’s exit from Chicago Fire. Although fans believe Stella became pregnant during a visit to Alabama to see Severide, this doesn’t negate the fact that Severide is absent from Chicago Fire season 11.
To further the issue, it’s unclear when exactly Severide will return. This fact doesn’t bode well with the Stella pregnancy theory because it means that Stella and Severide would be separated during the pregnancy, almost certainly putting a strain on their relationship. Based on the direction Chicago Fire is taking, it seems unlikely that showrunners would write Stella’s pregnancy at a time when Severide’s fate is up in the air. Fan theories about Stella being pregnant on Chicago Fire are certainly entertaining, however, they lack evidence and logic. While Stella may become pregnant at some point in the show, this storyline most likely won’t happen during season 11. If anything, Stella’s pause in episode 17 confirms that eventually Stella may want to have children with Severide. But until then, Chicago Fire will continue having Stella as its ambitious leader of Truck 81.
