Coronation Street’s Joe Layton breaks silence on Mick’s dramatic escape: “No-one is safe”

Coronation Street star Joe Layton has broken his silence on the dramatic prison escape involving Mick Michaelis.

The thuggish Mick was imprisoned in May following his brutal attack on Craig Tinker, who subsequently died from his injuries. Despite being convicted of manslaughter, Mick lacks remorse for his actions and makes a daring escape from prison next week.

Ahead of the dramatic scenes, Layton – who debuted on the soap in February – spoke with MirrorOnline to preview his character’s actions, teasing that the residents of Weatherfield should keep a watchful eye.

“No-one on the street is safe. We’ve seen what he’s capable of – he’s already killed Craig and attacked Kit. His plan is to look for his kids and try to escape,” said the actor, who also confirmed that there would be light amongst the darkness for his character.

“We see a different side to him and how much his kids mean to him. Serving a life sentence isn’t something he can deal with and he’ll do whatever it takes to get out of the country and take his kids with him.”

Mick’s escape from prison is facilitated by the involvement of his son Brody, with a chaotic prison siege culminating in a violent confrontation between Mick and friend-turned-enemy Kit Green, who is Brody’s father.

Ryan Mulvey, who plays Brody, explained his character’s motivations for helping Mick, saying: “Brody is desperate to keep his family together – he feels it’s his duty… [He] has morals and knows what Mick has planned is wrong, but he’ll do what it takes to keep his loved ones close.

“Brody idolises Mick and doesn’t want to disappoint him. He can’t comprehend he might not be his biological dad. It feels like Brody’s life has been shattered and he’s not dealing with it very well… His behaviour [has been] more impulsive since this bombshell about Kit.”
