Coronation Street aired an explosive cliffhanger on Friday night as it showed Gary Windass unconscious in a hospital bed.

Soap watchers will recall that Gary left the cobbles earlier this month to stay with his mother after Lou Michaelis attempted to blackmail him.

However, Gary’s wife Maria Connor and stepson Liam soon grew concerned when he failed to return home or answer any of his calls.

On Friday night, Maria finally received a message from Gary telling her he’s staying with a mate and he’ll be home soon.

Yet as the episode ended, it appeared Gary hadn’t sent the text at all as he was in hospital unconscious. Meanwhile, Nina Lucas broke down in tears following the midsummer party, where she took LSD, as she admitted to Roy Cropper: “I hurt someone, I’m sure of it and I have to find out who.”

However, soap watchers don’t think Nina had anything to do with Gary’s hospital stay and they’ve figured out why.

Viewers will recall that prior to Gary leaving the cobbles, Lou had memorised his phone password to send herself an incriminating text and later she tried to kiss him all in order to blackmail him for money.

In upcoming scenes, when Gary fails to come home or wish Liam a happy birthday, Maria’s concern escalates as she reports Gary as a missing person to Kit Green and learns about an unidentified coma patient.

Despite Kit’s initial assurance that it isn’t Gary, we learn the extent his attacker is taking to cover their tracks by changing his name and fraudulently claiming to be his next of kin.

As Gary remains in critical condition, the investigation into the incident continues. Upcoming episodes will delve deeper into the events that led to his hospitalisation, uncovering secrets and revealing the identity of those involved.

Viewers think due to Lou knowing Gary’s phone password and Maria receiving texts from him despite being in hospital, she and her criminal husband Mick Michaelis must be involved. Violent and jealous Mick is currently in prison after killing young police officer Craig Tinker.

Taking to social media, one person said: “There’s no way Nina Or Summer could inflict those injuries on Gary, it must have something to do with Lou as she has Gary’s phone password she must be sending Maria those messages!”

To which a different account put: “I think lou has been to see mick in prison made some lies up about gary&mick has got some of his thugs to beat him up and its lou thats sending the messages to maria bcos she knows whats happened to gary and £5 to a penny i reckon she will be after money next if it gets that far bcos wen gary wakes up and he knows who it is thats beaten him up he wont keep quiet so with a bit of luck lou gets locked up&thats how she goes out of it and tim&sally get to foster her daughters.”

While another viewer added: “There are so many twist and turns in this!!! Someone obviously got Gary’s phone. Got to be Lou cos she knows the pin to access the phone! #Corrie.”
