Sally Carman-Duttine has said she is “really proud” to be part of Sue Devaney’s dementia storyline in Coronation Street as she gushed about working with her co-star.

While it’s still a long way off, Sue, 57, will be departing her role as Debbie Webster in the ITV soap in a powerful storyline which has seen the hotel owner diagnosed with young-onset dementia – a degenerative condition which causes a decline in thinking, memory and reasoning skills.

Sally, 44, plays a major part in the storyline as her character Abi Webster – the wife of Debbie’s brother Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) – offers Debbie support as she comes to terms with condition and the reality that it is going to end with her dying.

And Sally admits it’s been an honour to share screen time with her friend Sue as part of such an important plot.

In an interview with Inside Soap magazine, she said: “I’m really proud to be a part of it. Sue is a really good friend of mine, so working with her in any capacity is wonderful.

“But to do those scenes, it’s really emotional. I hope there are a lot more scenes with me and Sue and this storyline, because I love it when Corrie do female friendship. It’s just brilliant.

“The scenes are really meaty, and you get to go there emotionally, and that’s an actor’s dream. So, yeah, I’m really proud to be a part of it and thankful for that.”

It comes after Sally was quick to declare her love for her castmate as she opened up about her latest storyline following scenes in which Debbie finally told her loved ones of her diagnosis.

Following the scenes, Sue took to Instagram with a moving shot of herself as Debbie in the hospital and said: “At the moment I am playing Debbie in Corrie and my character has been diagnosed with young-onset dementia.

“This story is such an important one to tell and shows how it truly does take a society to beat dementia. Alzheimer’s Society is a proud partner of @CoronationStreet, highlighting that help is available every step of the way… thank you so much if you’re watching and joining me on Debbie’s journey @alzheimerssoc.”

Sally was quick to respond, as she wrote in the comments section: “I love you my beautiful, wonderful friend.” Sally Dynevor, who plays Sally Metcalfe in Corrie, also gushed: “You are wonderful Sue. Love you.”

Todd Grimshaw star Gareth Pierce replied: “Subtle, brilliant and truthful every step of the way. Big love, Sue.” Cait Fitton, who plays Weatherfield’s Lauren Bolton, shared: “And your doing it sensationally.”
